Me+TV’s 2015 Fall TV Preview Part 3: ABC

preview 2

Part 1: NBC

Part 2: FOX

Part 4: CBS

Part 5: CW

Quick! What’s it About?: People in a small town in the middle of America fight over Oil, and also have tons of sex, apparently.

Whose Involved?: Oil stars Don Johnson (Miami Vice), Chase Crawford (Gossip Girl), Rebecca Rittenhouse (Red Band Society), and Scott Michael Foster (Greek). The show was created by Rodes Fishburne and Josh Pate (Falling Skies) and produced by Tony Krantz (24)

When will it Air?: Sundays at 9:00

Will I Watch?: To put it bluntly, Oil just doesn’t look interesting enough to merit it’s existence. The writers clearly added the Father-Son drama, the relationship stuff, and all the other nonsense to help sell America on a show about people digging for oil, which would normally air on some place like the History channel. For my money, it didn’t work all that well either. The only real reaction I had to this trailer was wondering why the hell two people would choose to fight in the middle of an oil puddle, when there’s a perfectly good, non flammable piece of land literally a couple of feet away. I’m gonna pass on this one.

Quick! What’s it About?: Based on the trailer, someone double crosses somebody else on this show once every 45 seconds.

Whose Involved?: The newest entry from uber-producer Shonda Rhimes (Scandal) stars Mirella Enos, Alimi Ballard (Numb3rs), Bethany Joy Lenz (One Tree Hill), Jay Hayden (The House Bunny) and Damon Dayoub (Stitchers) and was created by Jennifer Schuur (Hannibal)

When will it Air?: Midseason

Will I Watch?: At this point, most people know where they stand on the work of mega-producer Shonda Rhimes. I am not a big fan of her shows, they’re not necessarily bad, they’re just not my cup of tea. For those who do enjoy her work though, The Catch looks to be right in her wheelhouse of ridiculous, twist-filled, drama stuffed to the brim with intense scares and very attractive people.

Quick! What’s it About?: “Dunder Mifflin, This Is Kermit”

Whose Involved?: The show features the TV return of Kermit, Ms. Piggy, Gonzo, and the rest of the Muppet Gang. The revival was brought to life by creators Bob Kushell (3rd Rock From The Sun) and Bill Prady (The Big bang Theory)

When will it Air?: Tuesdays at 8:00

Will I Watch?: I know they didn’t make this TV show specifically for me, but a show starring the muppets, that has several meta jokes on TV tropes and filming styles, sounds a lot like it was specifically made for me. I’m not complaining though, I’m just very happy, and somewhat bewildered, that this exists. Long story short: The Muppets looks awesome, and I can’t wait to see the full thing!

Quick! What’s it About?: Let’s just put Ken Jeong on a TV set for a half hour and see what happens”

Whose Involved?: Dr. Ken is a starring vehicle for consistent scene stealer Ken Jeong (The Hangover, Community) and was created by Jared Stern (Mr. Popper’s Penguins) and directed by Scott Ellis (Frasier, 2 Broke Girls)

When will it Air?: Fridays at 8:30

Will I Watch?: After 6 seasons of groundbreaking work as Ben Chang on Community, you would think Ken Jeong would know a mediocre sitcom script when he saw one, but unfortunately, here we are. Jeong does his best to elevate the material, and it works sometimes, but there’s little he can do to cover up some pretty underwhelming writing. Also, the structure of mime plot looks like it was literally cut and pasted from About A Boy‘s premiere episode a couple of years ago, only with One Direction instead of Katy Perry. (Serious question: Of all the shows to blatantly rip off, why would you choose About A Boy?) After this trailer, I don’t have high hopes for Dr. Ken, but as a big fan of most of Jeong’s work I hope I’m wrong.

Quick! What’s it About?: An FBI training simulation gets very real, very, very quickly.

Whose Involved?: The show stars Tate Ellington (Remember Me), Aunjanue Ellis (The Help), Priyanka Chopra (Huge Bollywood film star), Dougray Scott (Mission Impossible 2), and Jake McLaughlin (Warrior). It was created by Joshua Safran (Gossip Girl)

When will it Air?: Tuesdays at 10:00

Will I Watch?: I was ready to write Quantico off early, especially after a pretty horrendous first minute. To my surprise though, the trailer amped up the stakes and the drama quickly, and definitely piqued my interest. There’s definitely a lot of potential here, and the pilot looks like it will take a couple of huge risks right off the bat. I’ll be tuning in to the pilot, because I’m definitely curious to see what happens next. Whether Quantico can keep me as a viewer after the premiere will be a different and much more difficult problem for the show to solve.

Quick! What’s it About?: A serial killer who calls a radio station and tells them his next victim, is, amazingly, still on the loose.

Whose Involved?: Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl), Erika Christensen (Parenthood), Taissa Farmiga (The Bling Ring), Gabriel Luna (Bernie), Karolina Wydra (Crazy, Stupid, Love), and Anne Winters (Tyrant)

When will it Air?: Midseason

Will I Watch?: The biggest problem I see with Wicked City is the execution of the connect. Though the initial premise is somewhat stereotypical, there is plenty of room for an amazing show about a cop chasing down a serial killer over a whole. Wicked City though, just doesn’t seem to be made with the care and precision some of the other shows in the genre, like Hannibal or even True Detective, are. I could see this show being done much better on a cable channel, but I doubt ABC gives it the support system and budget it needs, so I won’t be tuning into Wicked City anytime soon.

Quick! What’s it About?: You guys liked Black-Ish, right?

Whose Involved?: The adaptation of the 80’s hit comedy stars stand up comedian Mike Epps, Nia Long (Friday), and James Lesure (Las Vegas). It was created by Brian Bradley (MADtv) and Steven Cragg (SNL)

When will it Air?: Midseason

Will I Watch?: I’ll wait until the reviews, but this looks pretty funny. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before, but it looks like a well performed, solid family sitcom that could definitely carve out a place in ABC’s critically acclaimed Wednesday comedy block. It probably won’t be as good as Modern Family, or even Black-Ish, but it’s certainly a much funnier trailer than Dr. Ken.

Quick! What’s it About?: It’s Game Of Thrones, only without everything that makes Game Of Thrones amazing.

Whose Involved?: The show stars Shakespearean actor Oliver Rix, Ray Winstone (The Departed), and Simone Kessel (Frost/Nixon). It was ripped off, written by Bill Collage and Adam Cooper (Exodus: Gods And Kings).

When will it Air?: Sundays at 10:00

Will I Watch?:

How I imagine the pitch meeting for Of Kings And Prophets went:

CREATOR: Okay guys, hear me out: What if Game Of Thrones had lions instead of dragons and also couldn’t curse or show nudity?

ABC: We like it, but can you throw God and religion in there somewhere for absolutely?

CREATOR: I can work with that

ABC: I think we have a hit on our hands!

ME: *Re-watches all of Game of Thrones instead*

Quick! What’s it About?: Gone Girl, the TV show.

Whose Involved?: The Family stars Joan Allen (The Bourne Franchise), Allison Pill (The Newsroom), Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights), Liam James (Lil Shawn Spencer on Psych, The Way Way Back), and Rupert Graves (Sherlock). The show was created by Jenna Bans (Scandal)

When will it Air?: Midseason

Will I Watch?: Oh my god. Have you even recovered yet? No, I’ll give you a second. Okay. Here we go: This show looks absolutely crazy, in the best way. I was riveted by this trailer. Admittedly, I have no idea if it works in full form, or how it can be sustained throughout an entire TV series. But there’s no way I’m not tuning in to see what the hell is going on with this messed up family. Side note: If Ben Affleck and Rosemand Pike show up as their Gone Girl characters who are the mom’s parents I’ll lose my goddamn mind.

Quick! What’s it About?: The most diverse show made up of all white actors to ever exist.

Whose Involved?: The Real O’Neals was created by Casey Johnson and Divid Windsor (Don’t Trust the B– In Apt. 23) and stars Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope) and Jay R. Ferguson (The Lucky One)

When will it Air?: Midseason

Will I Watch?: The Real O’Neals is certainly going to have to perform a delicate balancing act throughout it’s run, but the trailer gives us a solid indication that the show just might be able to pull it off. If the show succeeds it will be a critical darling, that could spur some important conversations while giving people laughs. If the show fails, there’s no doubt in my mind it will do so spectacularly. The trailer gives hope to the first option, but right now I’d say it’s anyone guess in what category The Real O’Neal’s ends up in.

The Muppets, The Family

Quanitco, Uncle Buck, The Real O’Neals

Oil, The Catch, Dr. Ken, Wicked City, Of Kings And Prophets
