YOU’RE CURRENTLY READING Part 2: FOX
Quick, What’s it About?: It’s that Tom Cruise/Steven Spielberg movie you love, just without Tom Cruise or Steven Spielberg.
Whose Involved?: The show stars Meagan Good (Think Like A Man), Stark Sands (Inside Llewen David), Wilmer Valderrama (That 70’s Show), and Daniel London (Patch Adams). It was created by Max Borenstein (Godzilla) and Steven Spielberg took on an EP credit, along with a nice fat check.
When Will it Air?: Mondays at 9:00
Will I Watch?: Minority Report is one of many TV adaptations of movies coming this year. The original film is obviously a certified classic, so expectations are definitely high here. Will the show live up to tserialized, this trailer it’s hard to tell. While the premise is ripe for a solid crime procedural, with a serializedPerson Of Interest-esque mythology around the edges, this promo does little to justify the show’s existence. Hoping for the best here, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Minority Report fails spectacularly this fall.
Quick, What’s it About?: The Devil himself moves to Los Angeles and helps solve crime. Why? It doesn’t matter.
Whose Involved?: The show was Created by Tom Kapinos (Californiacation), directed by Len Wiseman (Sleepy Hollow) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates Of The Caribbean). It stars Tom Ellis (Rush), Rachael Harris (Chicago Fire), and D.B. Woodside (Suits).
When Will it Air?: Midseason
Will I Watch?: I wanted to hate this trailer so badly, you guys. The show’s logline is just so unbelievably stupid. Why?
WHY WOULD THE DEVIL LEAVE HELL, MOVE TO LOS ANGELES AND HELP DETECTIVES SOLVE CRIME?? It makes no sense. No matter how you look at it.
All that being said, Maybe it’s the charm of the devil, but this looks kinda good. The trailer was reasonably charming, the performances look to be interesting, and the tone was tongue-in-cheek enough to make me forget how astonishingly ridiculous the premise is. Will the show be any good? Probably not. But this trailer did an amazing job making me want to check out a show I was so ready to forget about forever.
Quick, What’s it About?: Rob Lowe trying to distance himself from his previous career moves (Both in real life, and in the show)
Whose Involved?: The Grinder stars Rob Lowe (Parks And Rec, The West Wing), and Fred Savage (The Wonder Years). The show is produced by Nick Stoller (Get Him To The Greek, The Muppets), Directed by Jake Kasdan (Bad Teacher) and created by Andrew Mogul and Jarrad Paul (Yes Man)
When Will it Air?: Tuesdays at 8:30
Will I Watch?: This looks downright hilarious. I can’t wait for this one! Rob Lowe looks funny, as does the rest of the cast. The writing looks sharp, and the premise is loaded with potential. I laughed a bunch during this trailer. FOX is quickly becoming home to some of TV’s best comedies (See: New Girl, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Bob’s Burgers) and The Grinder could be the show to cement that status and become a break out hit. Seriously, this show looks awesome.
Quick, What’s it About?: What if instead of Uncle Jesse, it was Grandpa Jesse?
Whose Involved?: Grandfathered stars John Stamos (Full House), Paget Brewster (Community) and Josh Peck (Drake & Josh). The show is produced by Dan Fogelman (Galavant, Crazy Stupid Love)
When Will it Air?: Tuesdays at 8:00
Will I Watch?: The cast here is top notch, and though the premise is a little cheesy, there are certainly some laughs in this trailer. John Stamos certainly knows his way around the unlikely father figure act, he could probably do it in his sleep after all those years of Full House. It’s also awesome to see Josh Peck getting a chance at a lead role after Drake & Josh. There’s nothing groundbreaking here, but Grandfathered definitely has solid, funny sitcom in there somewhere, and I think the talent involved are more likely to deliver the goods then strike out.
Quick, What’s it About?: I honestly got nothing here.
Whose Involved?: Created by Ryan Murphy (Glee, American Horror Story), the show has a huge cast that includes Emma Roberts (We’re The Millers), Ariana Grande (That song you can’t get out of your head) and Lea Michelle (Glee).
When Will it Air?: Tuesdays at 9:00
Will I Watch?: What the hell did I just watch? This exists?… Why? Ryan Murphy has way too much power, because now he’s pretty much making whatever he damn well wants, and taking talented actors with him. This show looks insane, in the worst way. Some of the people that watch the craziness that is American Horror Story might tune in here, but I most definitely will not be watching with them.
THE FRANKENSTEIN CODE
Quick, What’s it About?: What if Frankenstein was a cop?
Whose Involved?: The show stars Rob Kazinski (Pacific Rim), Tim DeKay (White Collar), Dilshad Vadsaria (30 Minutes Or Less). It was created by Rand Ravichand (Life) and is produced by Howard Gordon (24, Homeland)
When Will it Air?: Midseason
Will I Watch?: Without the procedural element, Frankenstein Code could be a compelling show, exploring death and the psychological effects of being reborn in someone else’s body. Instead, the show takes an interesting idea and waters it down into some case-of-the-week procedural takes all of the excitement out of it. Hey FOX, why does everyone have to be a cop and solve crimes? You know there are other interesting jobs out there, right?
Quick, What’s it About?: The guy from Like Mike solves crimes, and looks good doing it.
Whose Involved?: Created by Todd Harthan (Psych), Rosewood stars Morris Chestnut (Like Mike, because nothing else will ever top that film) and Jaina Lee Ortiz (The After)
When Will it Air?: Wednesdays at 8:00
Will I Watch?: Rosewood is probably the only show of FOX’s schedule that looks bland. It’s a simple procedural that also looks like it should be on USA. Seriously, tell me you don’t see this show coming on right after a 12 hour NCIS marathon. For fans of crime-of-the-week detective shows, Rosewood could certainly catch on, but I have very little interest.
THE GUIDE TO SURVIVING LIFE
Quick, What’s it About?: Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide for a whole new generation!
Whose Involved?: The show stars Jack Cutmore-Scott (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Meaghan Rath (Being Human) and Justin Bartha (National Treasure/The Hangover Franchises)
When Will it Air?: Midseason
Will I Watch?: This trailer probably has the biggest bombs of the comedy trailers I’ve seen thus far, but it also had some decent laughs scattered throughout as well (Ones they had to work quite hard for, to be fair). I don’t really know what the final product will look like, but The Guide is certainly going all in on craziness angle from the looks of that trailer, and given a lot of new show’s tendency to play it safe, you have to admire them for that.
